Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the refractive and visual outcomes of the Asphericity-Guided versus the Wavefront-Optimized treatments in myopic eyes
Setting:
The S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institution, Russia
Methods:
We observed 64 patients (64 eyes) with myopia, out of which 30 eyes were treated with the Q-factor customized profile (custom-Q study group), 34 eyes by the Wavefront-Optimized ablation (control WFO group). All eyes were operated using by the FS200 femtosecond laser and EX500 excimer laser (WaveLight Refractive Suite, Alcon). The F-CAT algorithm was programmed targeting a postsurgical corneal asphericity of -0.3. Manifest refraction, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity function, aberrometry and asphericity of the cornea were analyzed preoperatively and 1, 3, 6, 12 months postoperatively
Results:
The postoperative mean SE was -0.08±0.14D in the custom-Q group and -0.17±0.11D in the WFO group. All eyes were within ±0.5 D. The postoperative UDVA was 1.12±0.08 in the custom-Q group and 1.03±0.1 in the WFO group. The mean induced positive spherical aberration was 0.058±0.075 μm after the Asphericity-Guided and 0.234±0.023 μm after the Wavefront-Optimized FemtoLASIK (р<0.05). Change in Q-value was significantly less in the custom-Q group (0.15±0.12) than the WFO group (0.48±0.16). Contrast sensitivity testing showed significant improvement at all spatial frequencies in the custom-Q group and a slight decrease at higher spatial frequency in the WFO group
Conclusions:
The refractive and visual outcomes are comparable in the both ablation algorithms. The Asphericity-Guided FemtoLASIK induced significantly less changes in the spherical aberration and corneal asphericity compared with Wavefront-Optimized FemtoLASIK. The contrast sensitivity and patient’s satisfaction was better after the custom-Q treatment
