Accuracy of LASIK flaps created with a multifunctional femtosecond laser: a pilot study

Purpose:
To characterize the performance of a multifunctional femtosecond laser system for the creation of corneal LASIK flaps at one month follow-up
Setting:
Multi-center study at two surgical sites in the United States.
Methods:
This is a prospective, multi-center, non-randomized, open label study involving 58 eyes of 30 patients eligible for bilateral femtosecond LASIK surgery. Central flap thickness accuracy (desired vs achieved flap thickness) and precision (flap thickness standard deviation) was measured using an anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) at 1 month follow-up. Flap dissection quality, stromal bed quality and amount of opaque bubble layer (OBL) formation were graded during surgery and refractive outcomes were evaluated at one month postoperative.
Results:
Difference between the average central flap thickness achieved versus the target flap thickness was 3.3 (SD ± 3.8) µm at one month follow-up. 78% of the flaps were lifted without any resistance using a blunt instrument and 17% were lifted with minimal resistance using a blunt instrument. 100% had very smooth stromal bed quality. 73% presented with no OBL and 27% had less than 25% stromal bed area of OBL. The prediction error showed 93% and 98% were within 0.5D and 1.0D respectively.
Conclusions:
The multifunctional femtosecond laser effectively creates LASIK flaps that are accurate and precise.
