Abstract Details
Purpose:
Validate to what extent the use of standarized images for visualization of the optical side-effects halo and glare at pre-exams for trifocal RLE matches patient experiences at minimum 3 months post operatively.
Setting:
The Nordic chain of refractive clinics, Memira, have been using standardized photoshopped images to visualize the post operative optical side-effects halo and glare after trifocal RLE for 2 years. The validation study takes place at a single Memira clinic in Norway.
Methods:
25 patients are shown 4 standardized images of halo and glare at a night scenery including traffic light and pedestrians at pre-exam to set expectation level post operatively.
At 3-9 months the same images are shown to the same patients asking to estimate degree of similarity of vision compared to what the images shown.
Patients are asked in a clinical setting by same person doing the pre operatively exam as the exam post-operatively.
The study will not include patients that have undergone a secondary excimer laser treatment.
Results:
The images in use are slightly on the exaggerated negative side for optical halo and glare after surgery hence reduce pre operatively exceptions at pre exams. This effect is intentionally.
Conclusions:
The use of the Memira standardized visualization images for multi RLE is a valuable aid in the communication process of under-promise/over-deliver in refractive surgery using multifocal IOL lenses.
