Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcome and complication rate in eyes with hyperopic astigmatism which have undergone femtosecond laser LASIK treatment.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Frankfurt, Germany

Methods:

Between November 2006 and December 2014 82 eyes were treated for hyperopic astigmatism with Femto-LASIK. In 34 eyes of 19 patients preoperative, 1 month postsurgical and 1 year postsurgical data were present and were included in this retrospective study. Preoperative UDVA (logMAR) was 0.5 ±0.25 (0.1 to 1.22) and BDVA was 0.03 ±0.08 (-0.1 to 0.3). Spherical error was + 3.71 D ± 1.22 (+1 to +5D) with astigmatism of – 2.55 D ±1.23 (-0.75D to -5.75D). Visual acuity (logMAR), refraction, complication rate as well as number of retreatments were analyzed.

Results:

1 month and 1 year after surgery UDVA was 0.21 ±0.3 (-0.1 to 1.3) and 0.11 ±0.16 (-0.1 to 0.7). 9 eyes had a loss of 1 line of BDVA. Spherical error after 1 month was -0.14D ±0.87 (-4 to +0.75D) with astigmatism of -0.54D ±0.57 (-2 to -0.25D). After 1 year spherical error was 0.2D ±0.82 (-2.25 to +1.75D) with astigmatism of -0.63D ±0.52 (-2 to -0.25D). 4 eyes required retreatment due to residual refractive error, in 1 eye flap was lifted due to severe epithelial ingrowth.

Conclusions:

In general treatment of hyperopic astigmatism can be regarded as a safe procedure. However, visual outcome is worse than what is described in the literature for treatment of myopia or hyperopia without an astigmatic component.
