Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine the impact of angle Kappa on the incidence and severity of halos and glare after multifocal IOL implantation.
Setting:
Private practice
Methods:
A single surgeon case series of 85 patients and 176 eyes all implanted with either Oculentis MF 20 (88 eyes) or Zeiss Trifocal (79) intraocular lens All patients were asked to grade their glare and halo symptoms using a questionnaire and objective quantification of glare and halo was documented using computer simulation software. Angle kappa measurements were undertaken using Orbscan, Atlas and Accutarget.
Results:
The Oculentis Mf20 cohort reported significantly fewer glare and halo symptoms, and were more satisfied with night driving. Both cohorts were found to have significantly higher dissatisfaction ratings when measured angle kappa was greater than 3 degrees.
Conclusions:
A significant association exists between a larger angle Kappa and unwanted visual phenomena with Multifocal IOLs. Further analysis is required to give specific guidelines on IOL choice and positioning in the context of a large angle Kappa. Measuring Angle Kappa should be part of the workup for ll patients having MF IOL use.
