Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the efficacy, predictability and safety of an apodized toric trifocal diffractive intraocular lens FineVision (PhysIOL, Liège - Belgium) for distance intermediate and near vision in bilateral crystalline lens surgery with refractive purpose.

Setting:

Instituto Universitario Fernández-Vega (Oviedo). Spain.

Methods:

Clinical trial that enrolled 33 patients (66 eyes) who were bilaterally implanted with a trifocal toric FineVision lens. Inclusion criteria were: preoperative sphere in the range of correction of the lens, refractive cylinder between -5.0 and -1.5 dioptres (D.) and minimum follow-up of 3 months. Capsulotomy was performed using Lensex (Alcon, Texas – U.S.A.) femtosecond laser. After the phacoemulsification the lens was implanted in the bag. Refraction and distance visual acuity were analysed and the defocus curves were obtained. The refractive indexes of safety, efficacy and predictability of the procedure were also calculated.

Results:

Three months after surgery sphere had diminished from +1.30 to -0.01 D and refractive cylinder from -2.60 to -0.32 D. Uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities (UDVA and DCVA respectively) improved from 0.15 to 0.79 and from 0.76 to 0.84 (decimal scale). The calculated efficacy index was 1.04. 6.2% eyes, lost one line of DCVA. Calculated safety index was 1.11. 66.2% eyes were between ±0.50 D of sphero-equivalent and 100% were in the range of ±1.0 D. The defocus curve showed a distance vision of 1.0 and a range of vision between 40 and 66 cm. above 0.7 (decimal scale).

Conclusions:

The results of efficacy, safety and predictability of the apodized toric difractive FineVision IOL were good for distance, intermediate and near vision at three months post surgery. The refractive indexes above 1.0 suggest that this lens is a good choice for a bilateral lensectomy programmed with refractive purpose in patients with significant astigmatism.
