Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the cumulative incidence of Nd YAG capsulotomy rates in a multifocal hydrophilic IOL.
Setting:
Retina Total Eye Care, private refractive surgery clinic, Driebergen, the Netherlands
Methods:
Prospective case cohort. In 228 eyes implanted between 2011 and 2013 the 2 year incidence of Nd YAG laser capsulotomy was analyzed. All eyes were implanted with the Seelens MF (Hanita Lenses, Israel) diffractive hydrophilic multifocal IOL.
Results:
At completion of 12 months post-op, none of the eyes had a YAG posterior capsulotomy for visually significant PCO. At 24 months 6 of 228 eyes had a posterior capsulotomy (2.6%). In 136 eyes a 3 years follow up was completed, and the cumulative incidence of YAG capsulotomies was found to be 7.4%.
Conclusions:
The haptic and optic design, with 5 degree angulation, and a sharp edged optic, with a ring surrounding the optic may delay development of visually significant posterior capsular opacification in eyes implanted with a hydrophilic diffractive multifocal IOL. Long term development of PCO in these type of lenses still needs to be studied.
