Purpose:
To evaluate the effectiveness of monocular corneal inlay implantation for extending depth of focus within a centers’ first one hundred patients including emmetropic and post-LASIK presbyopes and monofocal pseudophakic patients.
Setting:
Private practice refractive clinic - Clear Choice Custom Laser Center, Brecksville, Ohio, U.S.A.
Methods:
A small aperture corneal inlay (KAMRA, AcuFocus) was implanted into a femtosecond laser (iFS, AMO) created corneal pocket. Results from the clinic’s first 100 patients are reported. 48% of patients were female and 52% were male. Preoperatively, 46% of the eyes were emmetropic (+0.50 D to -0.75 D), 50% had a prior history of laser refractive surgery, and 4% were monofocal pseudophakes. Uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA) and uncorrected distance acuity (UCDVA) in the inlay eye are reported at 3 months (N=70).
Results:
Mean UCNVA in the inlay eye at 3 months was 0.11 +/- 0.12, with 88% of eyes seeing 0.20 (20/30) or better at near. Mean UCDVA in the inlay eye at 3 months was 0.02 +/- 0.06, with 92% of eyes achieving 0.1 (20/25) or better at distance. Binocularly, 94% of patients were seeing 0.2 (20/30) or better at near and 100% of patients were seeing 0.1 (20/25) or better at distance. No statistical difference was found in the results between the emmetropic versus the post-Lasik presbyopes.
Conclusions:
Our results suggest that a small aperture corneal inlay implanted into a femtosecond laser-created pocket provides good near and distance visual acuity for presbyopic and monofocal pseudophakic patients.
