Purpose:
To assess refractive outcomes and satisfaction between patients undergoing femtosecond laser assisted refractive lens exchange and patients undergoing traditional RLE
Setting:
Optical Express, Glasgow, Scotland
Methods:
Patients were randomised into two groups. Group 1 underwent femto assisted surgery using the Catalys femtosecond laser. While Group 2 underwent a traditional RLE procedure. There were 200 patients in each group and all patients were implanted with the same type of intraocular lens, the Tecnis Symfony. Refractive data and patient feedback are presented
Results:
In both groups 71% were within 0.5D of target at one month with the mean spherical equivalent in Group 1 being -0.30D and in Group 2 -0.31. In terms of attempted versus achieved there was a greater degree of scatter in those patients in Group 1 with R2 = 0.95 versus R2 = 0.97 in Group 2. In uncorrected distance visual acuity Group 1 had 82% of patients 20/25 while in group 2 this was 86% (p<0.05). There were no other significant differences in either refractive outcomes or patient satisfaction
Conclusions:
Results were excellent in these well matched groups. However, patients who underwent femto assisted surgery had better uncorrected distance visual acuity although longer follow up is required to see if this benefit is continued.
