ReLEx SMILE with low energy levels: assessment of early visual and optical quality recovery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the early visual and optical quality recovery after Relex SMILE with a laser energy close to the plasma threshold (100nJ) for patients with low and moderate myopia and myopic astigmatism at 1 day, 8 days and 1 month postoperatively.

Setting:

Lyon, France

Methods:

This prospective study included 30 eyes of 30 patients in the low myopia group, with a mean spherical equivalent (SE) of -2.13 ± 0.73 diopters, and 33 eyes of 33 patients in moderate myopia group, with a mean SE of -4.53 ± 0.86 diopters. Visual acuity, refraction, corneal topography, Objective Scatter Index (OSI), Modulation Transfer (MTF) cut off frequency, Strehl Ratio and Optical Quality Analysis System (OQAS) values (OVs), contrast sensitivity (CS) and wavefront aberrations were measured.

Results:

At 8 days, 100% and 78,79% of eyes have 20/20 or better of UDVA respectively in the low and moderate myopia groups. At 1 month, CS recovered the preoperative values and slightly significant changes were found in corneal total HOAs and coma in both groups. No change was found in MTF cut off, strehl ratio and OVs in low myopia group. These values were significantly decreased compared to preoperative values in the moderate myopia group. At 1 month, both groups recovered the preoperative OSI values.

Conclusions:

Using a femtosecond laser with an energy level close to the plasma threshold contributes to have a minimal impact on the ocular scattering and a faster visual quality recovery in the first month after SMILE. The patients with preoperative low myopia achieved better and faster visual acuity and less ocular scattering than patients with moderate myopia.
