Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the short- and midterm corneal thickness spatial profile, corneal volume distribution and corneal power after SMILE

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Philipps University of Marburg

Methods:

Thirty-nine eyes of 22 patients, who underwent SMILE for myopia and astigmatism, were included in the study. Scheimpflug corneal tomography was performed preoperatively, at 2 months postoperatively and 3 years postoperatively. The corneal thickness spatial profile (CTSP) was evaluated on 4 concentric rings (2, 4, 6, and 8mm) around the point of minimum corneal thickness (MCT). The corneal volume (CV) distribution was evaluated at 3 zones (3, 5 and 7mm) centred on corneal apex. The mean simulated keratometry readings (Km) of the anterior and posterior cornea were recorded at 3 zones (3, 5 and 7mm) centred on corneal apex.

Results:

At 2 months, the CTSP at 2, 4 and 6mm was 470±32, 521±28 and 607±27μm, respectively. The CV at 3, 5 and 7mm zones was 3.37±0.22, 10.24±0.59 and 23.02±1.12mm3, respectively. The anterior cornea Km at 3,5 and 7mm zones was 38.91±1.79, 38.86±1.73 and 39.24±1.58D. At 3 years, the CTSP increased at 479±31, 529±26 and 612±24μm (P<0.001), respectively. The CV increased at 3.43±0.22, 10.38±0.55 and 23.28±1.01mm3 (P<0.001), respectively. The Km also increased at 39.16±1.95, 39.13±1.83 and 39.54±1.64D (P<0.001).

Conclusions:

The CTSP, CV and anterior corneal power showed significant increase 3 years after SMILE compared to 2-month postoperative outcomes.
