Excimer laser correction of moderate to high hyperopic astigmatism: 6 month results

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the postoperative visual outcomes of femtosecond laser-in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for treatment of hyperopic astigmatism using an aspheric ablation profile.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Goethe-University, Frankfurt, Germany

Methods:

This retrospective study evaluated 6 month results of femtosecond LASIK for hyperopic astigmatism in 54 eyes of 33 patients. The LASIK flaps were created with the AMO IntraLaseTM FS60 femtosecond laser (Abbott Laboratories Inc. Abbott Parl, Illinois, USA) and the ablation with the Schwind Amaris® 500 excimer laser (SCHWIND eye-tech-solutions GmbH&Co. KG, Kleinosstheim, Germany). Clinical outcomes were stability, safety, efficacy and predictability.

Results:

The mean preoperative spherical equivalent was 1.93±1.30dpt (-0.99dpt to 5.60dpt), the mean astigmatism -1.21±1.25dpt (-5.60dpt to 0dpt). The achieved mean spherical equivalent at the 6 month follow up was ±0.03dpt. At 6 months, 78% of the eyes had no change in best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA). 22% gained 1 or more lines. There were no losses of BCDVA. 82% of eyes had an uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) of 20/20 or better. 89% of the eyes were within ± 0.5D of the attempted correction and 78% were within ± 0.25D. No complications occured during or after the surgery.

Conclusions:

Aspheric femtosecond LASIK offers a reliable method for correction of hyperopic astigmatism.
