Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate a new surgical technique for the insertion of the ICOLENS corneal inlay.

Setting:

Mater Private Hospital. Dublin, Ireland.

Methods:

We describe a new technique for the insertion of a corneal inlay through a femtosecond-created pocket. This procedure is performed under topical anaesthesia and involves two stages. Stage one is creation of the corneal pocket using a Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser and stage two involves insertion of the hydrogel inlay using a unique preloaded deployment device.

Results:

The ICOLENS has been inserted in a total of 52 eyes to date of which five were explanted and eight were exchanged.

Conclusions:

We have found this new surgical technique for the insertion of the ICOLENS corneal inlay in the treatment of presbyopia to be a safe and reversible procedure in a series of 52 patients. We have demonstrated successful insertion, explantation and exchange of the ICOLENS corneal inlay with an excellent surgical outcome and no adverse effects to the cornea.
