Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report our experience in Hungary with 1 year follow-up to implant Vue+ corneal inlay to treat presbyopia.

Setting:

Methods:

15 Emmetrope-Presbyope and Hyperope-Presbyope patients were treated by implantation of the Vue+® Corneal Inlay (ReVision Optics Inc., Lake Forest, CA) in the non dominant eye under 150 μm corneal flap created by a FS Laser. The inlay, now commercialized as Raindrop™ Near Vision Inlay, is 2.0 mm in diameter, with a central thickness of 30 μm. It is fabricated from a biocompatible, clear and permeable hydrogel material. The inlay provides no significant optical power as its index of refraction is essentially the same as that of the cornea. In the Hyperope-Presbyope patients (preop refraction: +0,75D < +3,0D and astigmatic correction <+ 1,5D) the inlay was implanted in the non dominant eye after concurrent LASIK correction. The inlay is implanted under the corneal flap and centered over the pupil where it remains in position without the use of sutures.

Results:

In every case the corneal flap and inlay remained perfectly placed. Among the Hyperope-Presbyope group, 2 patients had mild transient haze which by the 6 month follow-up after treatment using FML for 1 month. In both groups the near vision improved by an average of 5 lines and the intermediate vision by the average of 2 lines in the treated eye. In 2 patients the inlay was slightly decentered; both patients reported good vision and high satisfaction. All patients retained > 1,0 distance binocular vision. No patient lost 2 or more lines of BCVAF in the treated eye. The presence of this particular inlay steepens the anterior corneal curvature, naturally increasing the optical power of the eye to provide improved uncorrected near and intermediate vision in presbyopic patients. Importantly, these patients do not lose binocular distance vision correction.

Conclusions:

The Vue+ (Raindrop Near Vision Inlay) is a well tolerated, effective surgical treatment for presbyopia.
