Abstract Details

Purpose:

To review the features and benefits of the ORA Systemâ„¢, as well as the accuracy, of an intraoperative wavefront aberrometers designed to provide real-time aphakic measurements during cataract surgery.

Setting:

Ruhr University Eye Clinic, Bochum, Germany

Methods:

The ORA System (Optiwave Refractive Analysis, WaveTec Vision System, Aliso Viejo, CA) is a new intraoperative wavefront aberrometers system that attaches to the surgical microscope. It uses Talbot-Moire interferometry, which provides a wide refractive range and is capable of measuring sphere, cylinder and axis. The system can perform aphakic measurements in order to perform IOL power calculations, confirm IOL power following implantation, as well as guiding toric IOL implantation and corneal relaxing incision placement. Global results are reported.

Results:

The global results for IOL power calculations found that the ORA system had an MAVPE (mean absolute value of prediction error) of 0.33 D +/- 0.29 D based on calculations performed on 2,200 eyes. Of this number, 49% were within 0.25 D, 79% were within 0.50 D, 93% were within 0.75 D and 97% were within 1.00 D.

Conclusions:

The initial experience shows that the new ORA System does help to improve refractive outcomes following cataract surgery. The system is able to perform aphakic IOL calculations with a high degree of accuracy across a wide variety of IOLs. Following an initial adaptation period, routine use of the system was possible, even in conjunction with a femtosecond cataract laser.
