The relationship between the size of the corneal incision and corneal wound architecture after cataract surgery by coaxial (2.6mm, 2.2mm) and MICS (1.5mm) technique

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the study is to evaluate the shape of the corneal incision, corneal edema and morphology of the corneal wound after cataract surgery using different modern surgical techniques.

Setting:

Department of General Ophthalmology Clinic, Medical University of Lublin, Lublin, Poland

Methods:

Sixty eyes of the sixty patients were classified to the study. All the patients had cataract 3 or 4 grade in LOCS III scale. Patients were equally divided into 3 groups depending on the incision size. First group was Coaxial group with 2.6mm incision. Second group was Coaxial group with 2.2 mm incision. Third group was MICS group with 1.5mm incision size. The structure of the incision, thickness of the incision, tissue adhesion were evaluated by Topcon 3D OCT-2000.

Results:

On first day after cataract surgery all incisions were closed in OCT examination in all groups. The differences were found in thickness of the cornea and descemet membrane adhesion in MICS group. On the 7th day and 30 days after cataract surgery difference was not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

Architecture of the MICS and Coaxial incisions differ in the short postoperative period. 1 week and 1 months after surgery incisions do not differ a statistically significant. All types of the incisions provide high grade of safety in post surgical period and they comply the rules of the postoperative infection prophylaxis.
