Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the influence of a capsular tension ring on the post-operative anterior chamber depth (ACD).

Setting:

Vienna Institute for Research in Ocular Surgery, Department of Ophthalmology, Hanusch Hospital, Vienna

Methods:

This prospective study included patients who were scheduled for bilateral cataract surgery. After optical biometry (IOLMaster 500, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany), cataract surgery was performed as standard. In all cases a hydrophobic acrylic single piece IOL was used (Tecnis ZCB00, Abbott Medical Optics, USA) and each patient received a CTR in one eye and no CTR in the other eye. ACD measurements were performed using partial coherence interferometry (ACMaster, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany) pre-operatively, and 1 hour and 12 weeks post-operatively.

Results:

Fifty eyes of 25 patients were included in this study. Mean ACD 3 months after surgery in the “with CTR” and “without CTR” group was 5.95mm (SD: 0.95; 95%CI: 5.56 – 6.34) and 6.05mm (SD: 6.05mm (SD: 0.90; 95%CI: 5.67 – 6.42), respectively. This difference was not found to be significant (p= 0.41; t-test for paired samples). Scatter plots comparing ACD in eyes with versus without CTR showed (r2=0.63; p= 0.00) that most of the patients (68% of all cases) had a larger ACD, if no CTR was implanted.

Conclusions:

Although there was a trend that implanting a CTR results in a slightly shallower ACD, this trend was not found to be significant.
