Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the visual results following an aspheric treatment applied to the LAL IOL.

Setting:

Center for Vision Research, Ruhr University Bochum Department of Ophthalmology

Methods:

Twelve eyes (of 12 patients) underwent cataract removal followed by LAL implantation. All eyes received an adjustment for asphericity after LAL implantation. Eleven eyes were available at the three month follow-up for inclusion here.

Results:

Two patients reported worsened distance visual acuity after application of aspheric treatment (corrected by myopic adjustment). At 3-months post adjustment, the majority of patients showed an improvement in uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA), and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA). Mean UCNVA improved from J5 pre-adjustment to J3 post-adjustment, mean UCIVA improved from J4 to J1, and mean UCDVA improved from J3 to J2. No clear correlation was observed between the amount of visual acuity gain and the treatment received.

Conclusions:

These findings show that the application of aspheric treatment following LAL implantation does provide for better near, intermediate, and distance visual acuity in cataract surgery patients. Further study involving more sensitive capture of data may allow confirmation of the validity of these results and identify the mechanisms that underlie the effects of aspheric treatment on visual acuity.
