Abstract Details

Purpose:

To observe the nerve fibers in the cornea after SMILE surgery. The number of nerve fibers were evaluated by sequential, quantative measurements of nerves viewed using in vivo confocal microscopy during the first six month after Relex surgery.

Setting:

The Dr Solomatin eye center, Riga, Latvia

Methods:

20 eyes of 10 patients were studied. Every patient undergo Relex (SMILE) surgery to correct myopia from -2.00 till -6.00 D. All the operations were performed using Carl Zeiss Meditec (CZM) VisuMax femtosecond laser system. Central cornea (460X345 mkm) was scanned throughout it full thickness using in vivo confocal microscopy technic before the surgery and after 2 weeks, 1, 3, 6 months after Relex (SMILE) surgery. The number of nerve fiber was counted in sub- basal region, stroma and lenticular bed.

Results:

In the stromal region the number of nerve fibers decreased by more than 80% in 1 week after the Relex procedure and it was significantly lower during all the post-surgery evaluations compare to the pre-surgery results (P<0,001). No significant differences were found in the lenticular bed compare pre-surgery and post-surgery results (P=0,18). During the follow –up time, after the 6 moth the number of nerve fibers increased, but remained less then preoperative value.

Conclusions:

The number of nerve fibers decreased by 80% immediately after Relex procedure.
