Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate improvement in near vision with scleral implant procedure and PMMA implants in emmetropic presbyopes.

Setting:

fourteen principal investigator sites throughout USA

Methods:

This prospective study measured DCNVA under standardized illumination pre-op, 3, 12, and 24 months after successful scleral implant procedure on 629 eyes of 328 patients. Inclusion criteria required 20/20 DCVA, manifest refraction SE between –0.50 to +0.75D, with up to 1.00D astigmatism, and 20/50 or worse DCNVA.

Results:

Pre-op mean DCNVA was 20/73. Post operatively 60%, 79%, and 96% of the eyes read 20/40 or better monocular DCNVA at 3 (n=434), 12 (n=214), and 24 (n=95) months respectively. Binocular DCNVA of 20/40 or better was achieved with 84%, 85% and 96% of the patients at these time intervals

Conclusions:

DCNVA improves over time with scleral implant procedure. Patients had better DCNVA when both eyes underwent scleral implant procedure and were measured together.
