Purpose:
To assess the safety and efficacy of the Raindrop (© Revision Optics) corneal inlay.
Setting:
Ultralase Eye Clinics, United Kingdom
Methods:
55 non dominant, near emmetropic presbyopic eyes of 55 patients had the Raindrop corneal inlay implanted by 3 surgeons. The patients were followed up for between 1 and 17 months. The inlays were implanted under a 150µ Intralase flap. All patients were aged between 43 and 64 years. All eyes had a spherical equivalent of between 0.00 and +1.50 and 0.75D or less of astigmatism. All eyes had good uncorrected distance vision (LogMAR 0.30 or better), and all eyes had reduced near vision (N10 or worse) with an average of N16.
Results:
The final follow up average monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity in the treated eyes was LogMAR 0.27 and the average spherical equivalent was -0.7D. Average uncorrected binocular distance visual acuity was LogMAR 0.05. The uncorrected near visual acuity improved to an average of N4. Postoperative complications included corneal haze which was treated with topical steroids. Patient satisfaction was 95% 3 months after the surgery.
Conclusions:
Unilateral implantation of the raindrop corneal inlay improves near vision and there is a high level of patient satisfaction.
