Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate new liquid hydrogel ocular bandages (OcuSeal and Resure) to cover clear corneal cataract surgical incisions.

Setting:

Centro Microchirurgia Ambulatoriale, Monza, Italy.

Methods:

At the conclusion of cataract surgery, we applied either OcuSeal liquid bandage (Beaver Visitec International) or Resure liquid bandage (Ocular Therapeutix) to reinforce closure of clear corneal incisions (up to 3.75 mm). Ocuseal in 225 eyes of 169 patients (83 males, 86 females, mean age 68.40 ± 11.59). Resure in 49 eyes of 46 patients (15 males, 31 females, mean age 67.47 ± 9.92). OcuSeal consists of a synthetic dentritic hydrogel comprised ot two separate components: powdered polyethylene glycol (PEG) and liquid polyethylene amine (PEI). The hydrogel is activated upon mixing and is then eaily applied as a liquid directly onto the ocular surface. Resure consists of a polyethylene glycol-based hydrogel . The hydrogel is activated by mixing two separate components: powder polyethylene glycol (PEG) and a diluent liquid precursor containing trilysine. After application, both bandages cross-link within 30 seconds to form a smooth, flexible barrier film that protects the incision.

Results:

During the immediate post-operative interval, patients treated with both bandage reported improved comfort. Resure protected the wound by remaining localized over the de-epithelialized tissue for at least 24 hours in 49(100%) of patients while Ocuseal within 12 hours.

Conclusions:

Liquid bandage applied at completion of cataract surgery may enhance incisional wound closure and improves post-operative patient comfort. After refilling with BSS, the anterior chamber is increasing with the bandages due to improvement of watertight properties
