Purpose:
To study visual outcomes for far, intermediate and near distance after Synchrony dual-optic accommodative IOL(AMO Santa Ana CA) implantation. To present a safe and effective surgical technique to support an easy Synchrony IOL positioning in the capsular bag.
Setting:
Centro Microchirurgia Ambulatoriale, Monza, Italy
Methods:
24 patients (35 eyes)underwent topical anaesthesia phacoemulsification and Synchrony lens implantation. Follow up visit were performed same day, day one, one week, one month, three, six months and one year. Surgical technique: 5.3 mm capsulorhexis, anterior and posterior capsule cleaning and enlargement of the incision with calibrated metal knife at 3.75 mm. Contrast sensitivity and halos rate were determinated.
Results:
Mean age was 71.44 ± 7.27 years. Far uncorrected visual acuity was 0.51 ± 0.21 at one month,0.80 ± 0.17 at two months, 0.99 ± 0.03 at three months, 0.90 ± 0.17 at six months and 0.94 ± 0.10 at 1 year. All patients read 16/20 (EDTRS) without correction at one month and adding +1 correction at six months. No discomfort or complications were noted postoperatively. Defocus curve analysis was applied to detect mean accommodative range. No contrast sensitivity penalization occurred. Quality of vision study detected moderate halos only in 14.3% of the patients.
Conclusions:
Synchrony dual-optic accommodating IOL appeared to be clinically effective. Uncorrected far vision safe for car driving was achieved within two months. Intermediate and near vision were comfortable within one week. Without contrast sensitivity penalization and diffractions, this allows IOL implantation in patients with possible high sensitivity to glare and halos
