Purpose:
Could the correction of low astigmatism improve optical and functional results?
Setting:
Augenklinik Cam
Germany
Methods:
In a prospective study, eyes of 28 patients underwent clear lens exchange. In the first group, the low astigmatism up to 1.25 was not corrected. In the second eye, the patients’ wish was for visual improvement for distance vision; thus, asymmetrical toric IOL was implanted.
We evaluated the postoperative uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) for distance, intermediate and near vision monocular and binocular with Wave front analysis. The quality of vision, glare, halos and the personal satisfaction of the patients were assessed with a questionnaire.
Results:
For the first group, the distance vision was 0.78, intermediate was 0.7 and near vision was 0.8. In the second group, distance vision was 0.89, intermediate was 0.72 and near vision was 0.84.
Conclusions:
In the eyes implanted with asymmetric MFIOL with Lentis Mplus toric X, the visual acuity improved for all distances and glare and halos were reduced.
Even a low astigmatism in patients implanted with MFIOLs could reduce visual acuity and patient satisfaction as well as increase glare and halos and for this reason must be corrected.
