Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine the relationship between BSS temperature and various outcomes of lasik surgery.
To compare between BSS at room temperature and cold BSS used during lasik.
Setting:
Future Center for Refractive and Corneal Surgery, Sohag, Egypt.
Methods:
In a prospective comparative study, all eyes had moderate myopia (-3 to -6) underwent conventional lasik with microkerstoma blade 90. Group A, 50 eyes; BSS at room temperature (20 degree Celsius) was used, while in group B, 50 eyes; cold BSS (16 degree Celsius) was used. outcome measures after one month were distant visual acuity(corrected, CDVA and uncorrected,UCDVA), manifest and cycloplegic refraction, patient satisfaction; especially scoring for pain sensation during surgery.
Results:
There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (p value more than 0.05) as regards UCDVA,CDVA, refraction. However, it was noticed a statistically significant difference ( p value less than 0.05) in patient satisfaction and pain scoring. Group B showed better patient satisfaction with less experience of pain or discomfort during surgery.
Conclusions:
Cold BSS could be more convenient for use during lasik and other refractive surgeries as it may be associated with less pain sensation and higher patient satisfaction.
