Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present the data up to 2019 outcomes balance  compiled in the biomedical explants IBERIA Biobank

Setting:

Division of Ophthalmology, Miguel Hernández University & VISSUM   Alicante, Spain.

Methods:

The data and IOL samples and other explanted materials are filed in the databases of OFTARED under anonymous code numbers and the physical samples are stored in fixing solution to preserve biological information. The RETICS’ members of the different investigational centers collected the explanted material from the eye and the related data.

Results:

The IBERIA Biobank gathered up to November 2019 a total of 1543 samples, mainly explanted IOLs (of the total amount recorded 35,49% are phakic lenses and 46,30% are pseudophakic lenses), explanted intracorneal segments (9,76%), other materials (8,45%), and the information relative to the materials removed from the eye.The IBERIA Biobank  has published along this time two thesis, nine papers and nine conference contributions based on the Biobank data. One conclusion obtained is that the main causes for IOL explantation are dislocation or descentration followed by incorrect IOL power and IOL opacification.

Conclusions:

The IBERIA Biobank is available for the scientific community. These data are available on request and with the agreement of the specific committee for research studies. All interested centers can contribute and broaden the Biobank by sending the explanted samples with the form Nowadays, the development and expansion of the IBERIA Biobank is one of the milestones in the current OFTARED project with reference number RD16/0008.
