Abstract Details
Purpose:
Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a rare complication of retro septal cellulitis. It is a serious condition that, without treatment, can lead to mortality. Our purpose is to report a case of orbital cellulitis complicated by cavernous sinus thrombosis
Setting:
Department A of Ophthalmology , Mohammed V University souisi, Faculty of Medicine, Rabat, Morocco
Methods:
A 13-year-old male presented with a 10-days history of right eyelid painful edema, conjunctival chemosis and proptosis accompanied by restricted ocular motility in the lateral view. Clinical examination showed best corrected visual acuity 20/32 in both eyes with no afferent pupillary defect. Intraocular pressure was normal and dilated fundoscopy revealed no pathology.
Results:
Computed Tomography of the orbits was performed, which demonstrated left orbital cellulitis with cavernous sinus thrombosis and ethmoidal sinusitis. The patient was admitted to Ophthalmology department in order to start on broad-spectrum antibiotics, corticotherapy and anticoagulant. Blood tests were within normal limits.
Conclusions:
Cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST) is a rare complication of orbital cellulitis. It should be considered in any patient with orbital cellulitis and should be suspected in the presence of rapid progression of the clinical signs And requires early treatment to minimize risks to the patient.
