Setting:
Ankara University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Ankara, Turkey
Methods:
Case report
Results:
A case of neurofibromatosis type 2 with papilledema is presented. The patient admitted with the complaints of headache and intermittant visual obscurations. Ophthalmic examination revealed bilateral papilledema. Cervical and cranial magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple meningiomas, and bilateral acoustic schwannomas. There was no venous sinus thrombosis on magnetic resonance venography. Her cerebrospinal fluid pressure was found to be high. Her complaints relieved and papilledema resolved after the treatment with acetazolamide.
Conclusions:
Regular ophthalmologic follow-up and education of the patient about possible complaints will be essential in prevention of visual mobidity in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2. Patients at risk for development of the complications of this disease should undergo careful ophthalmological examination.
