Abstract Details

Purpose:

Dry eye syndrome is one of the most prevalent ocular complaints among the patients referring to ophthalmology clinics, and Meibomian gland dysfunction is one of the most important causes of dry eye syndrome. These glands secrete sebum on the surface of the eye, which stabilizes the tear film, and the dysfunction may cause dry eye symptoms and unstable tear film. This study evaluated the association between serum level of Insulin growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and Growth hormone(GH) and Meibomian gland dysfunction.

Setting:

Valiasr Hospital, Birjand university of medical Science, Birjand, Iran

Methods:

This case-control study was conducted on 43 patients with Meibomian gland dysfunction and 43 controls at the University of Medical Sciences of Birjand, Iran. The sampling method was convenience from the date of approval of the proposal by the Ethics Committee until the sample size was reached. The subjects were individually examined by slit lamp for Meibomian gland dysfunction parameters. The serum growth hormone and IGF-1 levels were determined. Then, the results of the examinations were entered the information form of each patient. Finally,  the results were analyzed using software SPSS at the significance level of ˂0.05.

Results:

In MGD group, 30 patients (69.8%) were female and the rest were male, in the control group 31 patients (72.1%) were female and the rest were male. The mean age  was 42.46 ± 14.82 in MGD group and 41.13 ± 12.9 in the control group. The mean GH of the participants in the study in MGD group was 0.92 ± 1.61 and 2 ± 2.92 in the control group which was statistically significant (p≤0.022). The mean serum level of IGF-1 in MGD group was 171.22 ± 60.53 and 158.69 ± 57.89 in the control group, which was not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

The mean serum level of growth hormone was lower in patients with MGD than healthy ones, but this was not achieved for IGF-1.
