Abstract Details

Purpose:

To create awareness among the ophthalmologists regarding larval conjunctivitis as one of the causes of the conjunctivitis even in urban areas.

Setting:

Ophthalmology department of Mohammed V Military Medical training Hospital Rabat Morocco

Methods:

We report a case of 12 year old Moroccan boy, with no significant past medical history, who presented to the emergency room complaining of severe tearing, photophobia and a foreign body sensation in his right eye after feeling an insect strikes his right eye when walking in downtown. There was no history of proximity to domestic animals or visit to any rural areas.

Results:

His visual acuity was 10/10. The right eye was swollen. Slit-lamp examination revealed injection of the bulbar conjunctiva and diffuse follicular reaction of the palpebral conjunctiva.By pulling down the inferior eyelid, two motile white coloured small worms were noticed. The rest of the evaluation was normal. The diagnosis of Conjunctival myiasiswas established. The eye was locally anesthetized. Two tiny worms were removed with the forceps. The patient was treated with topical application of norfloxacin eye drops. He was seen 2 days post treatment and was found to be perfectly normal. The microscopic examination identified larvae of oestrus ovis.

Conclusions:

Conjunctivalo phtalmomyiasis is an inflammatory reaction of ocular coats caused by the larvae of Oestrus Bovis. It is an usual cause of acute conjunctivitis to consider in urban areas. Careful examination with double eyelid eversion helps to locate the organisms.
