Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine the effect of vancomycin under the minimum inhibitory concentration on Bacillus cereus isolated from cataract surgery candidates.
Setting:
Eskisehir Technical University, Faculty of Science
Methods:
Biofilms were determined in 96-well cell culture plates. Biofilm stained a crystal violet 2% and optical density was recorded 570 nm wavelength to estimate the biofilm density. The number of bacteria and time-kill studies were made on selected isolates.
Results:
Some strains to show increased biofilm density at vancomycin concentrations approaching the minimum inhibitory concentration. This increased biofilm density may be associated with the presence of a more resistant population. After biofilm has formedĀ Vancomycin at MIC concentrations did not show effect.
Conclusions:
The demonstration that low concentrations of vancomycin may increase the density of newly forming B cereus biofilms; may indicate an area of potential concern in the use of vancomycin in eye.
