Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to assess the modifications of central corneal thickness (CCT), epithelial thickness (ET) and limbal thickness (LT) using AS-OCT, in patients undergoing chronic topical glaucoma therapy. We also analyse the correlation between this parameters, duration and type of glaucoma therapy.

Setting:

The study was conducted at ophtalmology department, at the Hassan II University Hospital Center of fez (University of Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah). Morocco.

Methods:

This prospective single-center study included eyes of glaucoma patients and eyes of healthy subjects. All patients underwent ophthalmic examination with measure of intraocular pressure, standard automated perimetry and optic disc tomography. The sweept source tomography with anterior module was used to measure CET; ET and LT. Linear regression analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship between this parameters and exposure to antiglaucomatous medication during the follow-up.

Results:

40 eyes of glaucomatous patients and 30 eyes of healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. The mean age of glaucomatous patients was 59, 46 (ET+/-7, 66). The CCT of glaucomatous subjects was 517,83 µm compared to 533 µm in healthy group was insignificant (p=0,7), also  the difference in the LT between the 2 groups is non-significant. However the epithelial thickness was different between the two groups (p=0, 04). However, the difference in the LT between the 2 groups is non-significant. The statistical analysis does not show any relationship between this parameters and exposure to antiglaucomatous medication during the follow-up.

Conclusions:

Epithelial corneal changes during glaucoma must be considered during the following of glaucoma patients. Follow-up intraocular pressure measurements may be underestimated for eyes treated.
