Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid: a case report

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the favorable outcome of a patient with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, which was refractory to conventional treatment but recovered after immunosuppressive agents.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Military Hospital of Tunis, Tunisia

Methods:

A 63-year-old woman was admitted to dermatology department for a subepidermal bullous lesions which was refractory to local corticosteroid, was suffering from ocular irritation. She underwent detailed ophthalmic investigation.

Results:

A 63-year-old woman presented with bilateral ocular irritation. The slit-lamp examination revealed a bilateral subconjunctival fibrosis, fornix foreshortening and synechia formation between the bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva. The diagnosis of cicatricial pemphigoid was based on clinical picture and histopathology combined with immunofluorescence methods. Systemic corticosteroid (methylprednisolone) therapy in combination with immunosuppressive agents proved successful in the treatment of skin’s lesions as well as for stabilization of ocular lesions.

Conclusions:

Prompt recognition of cicatricial pemphigoid and close patient monitoring are an imperative for the future prognosis of the disease. Immunosuppressive agents are a therapeutic alternative in case of no response to conventional treatment
