Purpose:
describe the profile of patients that are victims of anterior segment intraocular foreign bodies (AS-IOFB) and their use of protection means.
analyze their attitude and its correlation to the prognosis.
Setting:
adult ophthalmology department, 20 August hospital, Ibn Rochd University Hospital, Medicine school, Hassan II University, Casablanca
Methods:
A prospective cross-sectional study, conducted in adult ophthalmology department from October 2018 to March 2019 and included all adults that presented themselves for work-related AS-IOFB whether or not it was associated with a posterior segment lesion.
Results:
a total of 130 patients were collected, 64.6 % didn't have health insurance, 63.8 % didn't use any protection mean. 18.5% tried to remove their corneal foreign body (FB) by themselves. The most frequent complication was corneal opacity (27%). the infection rate was correlated to the metallic nature of the FB (p-value : 0.001) and to the consultations delay (0.05). consultation delay was correlated with having health insurance (0.002).
Conclusions:
ocular work-related injuries are not uncommon, we highlight the importance of using adequate protection means at the workplace and the necessity of providing all workers with health insurance.
