Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of this study was to report the epidemiological and the clinical aspects of pterygium at our Ophthalmology Department.
Setting:
Adult Ophthalmology Department, 20 August Hospital, Ibn Rochd University Hospital, Casablanca, Morocco.
Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Casablanca, Hassan II University.
Methods:
A prospective study was performed at our Ophthalmology Department from april to september 2019.
The target population was anyone with a pterygium.
The patients had a complete ophthalmic examination before the surgical care, followed by a medical follow up for at least six months.
Results:
During the period of the study, 124 patients with pterygium were registered, which means a prevalence of 1.10%.
The mean age of the patients was 43 (going from 29 to 69 years old)
Men represented 56% of the cases while women 44%.
97% occurred on the nasal side, none had temporal pterygium only (0%), and 3 had both nasal and temporal pterygia (3%).
65% of the responders have grade 2 pterygia, and 95% having either grade 1 or grade 2 pterygia.
Most of them had little formal education and began working outdoors in fishing-related occupations from their early teens.
Conclusions:
There is a high prevalence rate of pterygium among the study subjects, with the rates increasing rapidly with age.
There were many modifiable risk factors associated with pterygium such as U.V. B exposure
