Bee sting related endophthalmitis: devastating ocular trauma outcome

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe a case of bee bite ocular injury that develop secondary severe bacterial endophthalmitis with a final poor visual outcome

Setting:

Emergency room King Khaled eye specialist hospital

Methods:

Case report

Results:

Retrospective review of the medical record .Patient presented 24 hours after bee sting ocular injury. He had a mild inflammatory signs at presentation, He underwent surgical exploration to rule out scleral defect which revealed sealed defect. During hospital course, he develops signs of endophthalmitis in 48 hours post-trauma. Vitreal tap and Intravitreal antibiotic were done. Microbial culture revealed gram-negative Rods, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Aeromonas veronii. his condition escalated to reach the pan-ophthalmitis stage and orbital cellulitis like , visual acuity of no light perception — finally, the evisceration of the globe done to control his ongoing spread of ocular infection

Conclusions:

Bee sting ocular injury is rare type of trauma. concomitant infection can happen, and severity depends on pathogen .It is crucial to have insight and aggressive treatment according to patient presentation.
