Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the effect of topical glycerine eye drop on improving corneal oedema in cases undergoing DMEK surgery .
Setting:
Kasr El Eini Hospital Cairo University
Methods:
This is a comparative study of 40 eyes suffering from endothelial decompensation with remarkable corneal oedema (600-900 um) and scheduled for DMEK. They were divided into two groups of 20 eyes each ;group (A ) received preoperative gylcerin syrup instilled as eye drops ( 5 times per day two days before the operation and every 5min for one hour immediately preoperative ) while group( B ) did surgery without it .Corneal thickness was measured preoperatively before and after eye drops .The duration of DM scoring was recorded . All cases were operated by the same surgeon .
Results:
This study included ( 16 Male and 24 female) with age ranging from 40-80 years. Pseudophakic corneal decompensation was the main indication for surgery (40 eyes). The corneal thickness was remarkably decreased in group A compared than group B and it is statistically significant .The duration of DM scoring and unfolding of the injected DM was less in group A than in group B but it is statistically insignificant
Conclusions:
Use of gylcerin eye drop before DMEK surgery could be a useful tool to decrease corneal odema and improves visualising the diseased endothelium hence accelerating removal of the diseased endothelium unfolding of the graft and reduces the operative time
