Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim was to study corneal epithelial and stromal thickness in healthy young myopic adults and their relationship with the gender, age and the degree of myopia.

Setting:

Mohammed V university ,Departement of ophtalmology A,Hôpital Des Spécialités, Rabat,Morocco.

Methods:

In this study, a total of 44 subjects were analyzed .They were recruited sequentially among healthy volunteers. All the included subjects received a full ophthalmic examination including the measurement of best-corrected visual acuity ,slit lamp anterior segment biomicroscopy, and fundus examination .None of the included eyes had any concurrent ocular disease other than a refractive error. The epithelial and stromal corneal thickness were obtained using optical coherence tomography. We analyzed the relationship between: epithelial and stromal corneal thickness the degree of myopia  ,age and gendre.

Results:

This serie included 44 subjects . The median age was 30,04 years(19-45) . There were 22 males (aged 30,50 ) and 22 females (aged 29,59).  The epithelial thickness of the central zone showed no significant variation with myopia severity. Conversely, stroma tends to be thinner in high myopia than in low myopia. and we find that stromal thickness is thinner in patients aged >45 that the patients aged<25. and there was no gendre-related differences in terms of either the epithelial or stromal.

Conclusions:

The  present study showed that the epithelial thickness is not correlated with myopia severity or gendre. While the stromal thickness is inversely associated with myopia severity and age, but it is not correlated with gendre. Further studies with grand echantillon  should be performed.
