Abstract Details
Purpose:
To demonstrate the role of pregnancy in progression of ectatic corneal disorders.
Setting:
Cases collected from private and academic practice members of the Egyption Society of Keratoconous and Corneal Transplant (ESKC&CT) research group.
Methods:
Ten female patients presenting with drop of vision associated with pregnancy, whether with history of previous corneal refractive surgery; surgery for keratoconous or untouched corneas were assessed regarding visual acuity, disease duration and previous intervention. Any therapeutic intervention was noted. Whenever possible follow up data was recorded.
Results:
Age mean was 31 years ±7.5 (range 22 - 44)
There was an increase in the average Keratometric readings Km from 45.1 D to 47.1 D but it was not statistically significant p=0.13
There was a decrease in the Thinnest location of the cornea from 482.7 µm to 455 µm but it was not statistically significant p=0.34
Statistical Analysis did not show a significance difference between the two groups. This is probably due to the small sample size and the short period between the initial presentation and the repeated tests.
Conclusions:
Pregnancy affects progression of ectatic corneal disorders to various degrees. Study has to be performed on a wider scale to obtain significant data
