Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the prevalence of keratoconus in patients seeking refractive surgery to correct their refractive errors and to study common risk factors.

Setting:

The Future center of Lasik and refractive surgery in Sohag governorate, Egypt.

Methods:

A prospective randomized clinical study was done in the period from April to October 2018. 1202 eyes were examined. Screening was bilateral in 798 patients and unilateral in 404 patients. Evaluation included: 1. History taking: age, sex, history of consanguinity, allergic conditions by counting the approximate number of attacks per year. 2. Examination by doing pentacam to all cases and observing pachymetry, keratometry, high posterior surface elevation.

Results:

The resulting keratoconic eyes were 293 (14.65 %) of 210 patients. Sex: keratoconus cases were 117 males (165 eyes, 56.25 %) and 93 females (128 eyes, 43.75 %). Consanguinity: positive in 42 %, and negative in 58% of cases. Attacks of eye allergy per year: 3.05 +/- 2.363 in males, and 2.42 +/-1.853 in females. Pachymetry was 436.59+/-52.26 um in males and 468.67+/-51.07um in females. Keratometry was 48. 36+/-6.17D in males and 48.08+/-4.0D in females. Posterior surface elevation was 37.28+/-29.41um in males and 36.50+/-24.5um in females.

Conclusions:

Increased prevalence of keratoconus is not an actual increase in the number of cases, but it is due to increased liability of diagnosis of the disease by enhanced technologies including the pentacam. In the study, higher percentage of patients were males in the middle age group (25-35 years) in both genders. However, grade of keratoconus was higher in younger age groups (15-25 years) who had higher prevalence of attacks of eye allergy.
