Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the potential efficacy of a new treatment modality for pellucid marginal degeneration.
Setting:
Federal State Institution "Clinical hospital of the presidential administration of the Russia"
Methods:
A case series of eight patients diagnosed with pellucid marginal degeneration suffering from visual deterioration due to a high irregular astigmatism, who underwent a new surgical procedure that combined intrastromal lamellar keratoplasty with the use of refractive lenticules obtained from donor patients during the myopic SMILE procedures and intracorneal ring segment implantation, which enabled both ametropia and a corneal thinning correction.
Results:
In 3 to 6 months postoperative period the UCVA had improved from 0.03±0.02 to 0.3±0.1 and the BCVA from 0.3±0.1 to 0.6±0.1 (decimal). The corneal topography demonstrated a decrease in simulated keratometry values and an astigmatism reduction from 11.25±2.50D to 3.75±2.00D.
Conclusions:
Despite the lack of long-term observation the new technique proved successful for a number of patients and allowed for a simultaneous cylinder reduction and reinforcement of the thinned cornea.
