Purpose:
Shield ulcer is a severe form of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). It is an uncommon, incapacitating corneal manifestation that occurs in 3%–11% of patients suffering from VKC.
Our objective was to illustrate this rare complication of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and what kind of method can we use to treat this pathology.
Setting:
The study is made in Ophtalmology department at HASSAN II university hospital, Fez. Morocco ,SIDI MOHAMED BEN ABDELLAH university Fez Morocco
Methods:
We report a case about a child having a shield ulcer complcating a vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC).
Results:
A child aged 10 years came to the ophthalmology department with complaints of pain and redness in left eye for 3 days. He had similar complaints of itching and redness for the last 6 months. His visual acuity was 0.5/10 in the left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed giant papillae and in the left eye a shield ulcer in the inferior part of the cornea . Treatment was started with topical steroid eyedrops, lubricating eyedrops and amniotic memebrane graft. After 1 months , the ulcer got healed and visual acuity in the left eye was 3/10.
Conclusions:
Shield ulcer, as a rare complication of VKC, should always be kept in mind for patients suffering from vernal conjunctivitis.
