Abstract Details
Purpose:
to evaluate the effectiveness of the amniotic membrane in the therapeutic treatment of infectious keratitis.
Setting:
the study is made in ophtalmology department at Hassan II University Hospital , Fez, Morocco.SIDI MOHAMED BEN ABDELLAH University Fez,Morocco.
Methods:
This is a prospective, non-comparative, reporting 15 cases of severe keratitis with delayed healing and important sign of persistent infection initially treated with an antibiotic therapy protocol associated with the following transplantation of amniotic membrane, with a follow-up period of 6 months .
Results:
Our study reports 15 eyes with severe infectious keratitis. Mean age was 47.8 years with a male predominance in 66.66% of cases. The most found germ is Gram-positive cocci. Ocular trauma is the main cause of infectious keratitis. All of our patients reported improvement in functional signs including pain during amniotic membrane transplantation. The average healing time was 7.2 days. The main complication was the occurrence of corneal neovascularization.
Conclusions:
The transplant of the amniotic membrane is a simple and easily accessible surgical technique that must be part of the therapeutic arsenal of surface ocular pathologies, especially infectious keratitis, which constitutes an important therapeutic arsenal in their management.
