Abstract Details
Purpose:
Adaptation to rigid contact lenses can significantly improve visual acuity. The optical and physiological qualities of rigid contact lenses explain their indications.
Objective of our work is to share our experience in adapting patients to rigid contact lenses in the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department of “August 20” Hospital.
Setting:
pediatric ophthalmology service,hospital 20 august
Faculty of Medicine of Casablanca,Hassan University 2
Methods:
This is a descriptive retrospective study of 36 cases collected during the contactology consultation from January 2011 to November 2013. We conducted a pre-adaptation assessment including a thorough interrogation, a biomicroscope examination, and a paraclinical exploration using the corneotopographer in case of suspicion of keratoconus.
Results:
36 patients,43 eyes with an average age of 24 years.a unilateral adaptation in 29 cases and bilateral in 7 cases including 3 cases of keratoconus,2 cases of high myopia, 1 case of aphakia, and 1 case of accomodative strabismus.Initial visual acuity in all categories is less than 1 / 10th for 30 eyes;between 5 / 10th for 11 eyes.On an average follow-up of nine months the final visual acuity is 5 / 10th for patients who had an initial VA less than 1 / 10th,8 / 10th for those with an initial VA between 1 / 10 and 5 / 10
Conclusions:
Adaptation to rigid contact lenses is a medical practice whose success is based on a good indication
and a port that strictly adheres to safety rules
