Abstract Details
Purpose:
The purpose of this work was describing a case of corneal ulceration secondary to vitamin A deficiency and reminding about the potentially devastating effects of this deficiency on the eye in developed populations .
Setting:
the study is made in ophthalmology department, at HASSAN II University Hospital , Fez , Morocco
SIDI MOHAMED BEN ABDELLAH university Fez Morocco
Methods:
We present a case of corneal ulcer with abscess on hypovitaminosis A.
Results:
We received in consultation a 10-month-old, with a psychomotor retardation, without any notion of trauma, presenting a painful red eyes with purulent secretions. The examination finds a positive glare reflex but with a child unable to catch the objects. The examination of the anterior segment objective on both eyes a corneal ulcer covering the entire corneal surface, infected, with a white abscess, axial, well limited. The patient had a conjunctival and corneal sample, in favor of Gram-positive cocci and was treated with general and local antibiotic therapy, artificial tears, and vitamin A ointment with a good improvement.
Conclusions:
Vitamin A deficiency is a fairly common disease in developing countries and may result in various eye diseases including ulcers and corneal perforation. The treatment of this disease is simple and inexpensive. It is therefore important to recognize and treat accordingly, particularly in cases of ulcers that do not respond to treatment or in the presence of severe malnutrition and malabsorption syndromes.
