Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the clinical features and the surgical management of progressive corneal endothelial cell loss following bilateral implantation of cosmetic artificial iris implants.
Setting:
University Hospital Ayr, Ayr, Scotland, UK
Methods:
Single interventional case report. A 50 year old Caucasian female presented with bilateral corneal edema with progressive bilateral corneal endothelial cell loss following implantation of a angle supported cosmetic iris implant (Bright ocular) performed for cosmetic iris colour change. The surgical technique of explantation will be demonstrated with videos.
Results:
Bilateral explantation of the cosmetic artificial iris implant was performed with no intraoperative complications. This lead to stabilization of corneal endothelial cell density.
Conclusions:
Poorly designed angle supported cosmetic iris implants can cause progressive corneal endothelial cell loss and surgical explantation of this device can halt the endothelial cell loss.
