Abstract Details
Purpose:
Clinical correlation between dry eye and pterygium
Setting:
The purpose of our work is to study the prevalence of dry eye in patients with pterygium and to find the clinical correlation between dry eye and this pathology.
Methods:
Our study was conducted in the ophthalmological service of the military hospital in Marrakech between February and November 2019. This study has experienced 230 patients, 100 of them have a unilateral pterygium and the others as a control group. Break up time BUT, Schermer test and basic secretion were measured in all patients.
Results:
The study revealed that 65% of patients with pterygium had red-eye and 44% of them had cosmesis discomfort. The average values of the BUT were 8.56 ± 4.05 seconds, the Schirmer test at 12.12 ± 3.57 mm, the basal secretion at 10.02 ± 4.90 mm in patients with pterygium and 15.11 ± 3.56 seconds, 17.40 ± 5.73 mm, 12.12 ± 5.32 mm in the control group, respectively. We found a statistically significant difference between dry eye of patients with pterygium and the control group (p <0.001)
Conclusions:
The prevalence of dry eye in patients suffering from pterygium was higher than the control group. Accordingly, we conclude that there is a close correlation between dry eye and pterygium.
