Abstract Details
Purpose:
to evaluate the efficacy of the protective eye-shield as an adjuvant measure in the management of infectious keratitis.
Setting:
Adult ophthalmology department, 20 august hospital, Ibn Rochd university Hospital, Faculty of medicine, Hassan the 2nd university, Casablanca, Morocco
Methods:
A case-control study was conducted to adult ophthalmology department between August 1st, 2017 and august 1st, 2018 including all patients admitted for infectious keratitis. Visual acuity before and after treatment, the ulceration size, healing time, hospital stay and financial cost of treatment were compared between patients who used protective eye-shields and patients who used simple eye-pads.
Results:
97 patients were admitted to the department for infectious corneal ulcer, 48 patients used protective eye shield, there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding age, gender, infectious agent. The visual acuity increased by a mean of 0.2 LogMAR, healing time depended on ulceration size and hospital stay was 2 days shorter for patients who used protective eye-shields.
Conclusions:
Using protective eye-shields instead of eye-pads appears to be an efficient measure to help reduce hospital stay and healing time for patients suffering from infectious keratitis.
