Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy of scleral lens with autologous serum in corneal healing of different ulcers
Setting:
Adult ophtalmology department, August 20th 1953 Hospital, University Hospital Ibn Rochd, Faculty of Medicine, Hassan II University, Casablanca, Morocco
Methods:
We enrolled 3 different cases of non infectious corneal ulcers.
After failure of the usual surface treatments, a scleral lens with autologous serum diluted to 20% was adapted
Results:
The first patient had a neurotrophic keratitis complicating herpes. The second patient had a neurotrophic keratitis due to chronic instillation of preserved antiglaucomatous drops. The third one had a chemical burn with limbic insufficiency inducing a chronic ulcer.
All 3 patients responded well to treatment with complete epithelial healing in the second month.
Conclusions:
Scleral lens and autologous serum have proved their effectiveness separately.
Using them as complementary treatments can give new impetus in the management of corneal scarring in non infectious corneal ulcers.
