Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the topographic and topometric parameters, thickeness profile, and enhanced elevation maps from both eyes of unilateral keratoconus patients and normal controls.

Setting:

The study is made in Ophtalmology department at HASSAN II university hospital, Fez. Morocco SIDI MOHAMED BEN ABDELLAH university Fez Morocco

Methods:

In this retrospectif study, we evaluated 30 unilateral keratoconus. From these patients, 30 keratoconus eyes (groupe 1), 30 normal eyes (groupe 2) were compared to 30 right eyes of normalĀ  patient who visited the hospital for preoperative assessment refractive surgery (group 3). The study is based on the comparison of topographic, topometric, pachymetric and enhanced Belin / ambrosio elevation maps, The statistical analysis is done by SPSS software

Results:

The mean age is 28,5 years in groups 1 and 2, and 27,07 years for group 3 with no significant difference between groups (p=0,346). There is a significant difference between groups 1 and 2 in all parameters analyzed except for difference of maximum anterior elevation above/below the best-fit sphere (p=0.74) There is a significant difference between groups 2 and 3 in all parameters analyzed except for elevation back at the thinnest location (p=0,187), thinnest location absolute distance from apex (p=0,281), corneal thickness spatial profile at 2mm (p=0,784)

Conclusions:

In patients with unilateral keratoconus, the adelphe eye is statistically different from a normal eye or for a keratoconic eye. hence the need for regular monitoring of the so-called normal eye some parameters derived from the Scheimpflug device, such as elevation back at the thinnest location, thinnest location absolute distance from apex and change of the curve of corneal thickness spatial profile, may guide the surveillance of a suspect, or the eye of a unilateral keratoconus
